Girl Scout Dads
Being a Girl Scout Dad, with all the rules!

Back from another campout

April 26th, 2009 by admin

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to go camping with our junior troop. I think I can recap the weekend in five bullet points:

  • Rain
  • 2nd degree fire burn *on one of the leaders, kids safe*
  • Outdoor cooking, box oven, dutch oven, wood fire, propane stove = very full kids and leaders
  • Outdoor movie
  • Total Exhaustion

I think that sums it all up.

This was my first campout with other people around.. people other than my troop and leaders who know who I am. I was nervous. Really. Men are still controversial in girl scouting, and here would be other leaders with viewpoints that might be hostile to mine.

Nothing to worry about, the most comments came from other girl scouts.. “Hey, what’s he doing here?”, and “They let guys in now?”. In all fairness to the kids, these comments came from other Juniors, who as we all know are really good at speaking what is on their minds.

There were a few double takes of some leaders, but I think it was a positive experience for all. In fact, one of the leaders reported that after seeing a male involved in GS, she had a dad who wanted to get involved, she started soliciting ideas from the others leaders as if she should “allow” this dad to participate.

I hope to write about a few more things from this weekend in the following days.
